J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;11(2):9-12.

This study was under taken to observe the effect of topical use of local analgesic Bupivacaine with adrenaline 1:200,000 to relieve postoperative pain after tonsillectomy and avoid use of systemic narcotic analgesics and allow the patient to recover consciousness after general anaesthesia without pain in the throat. The study comprised of two hundred patients in the age group of 10-40 years undergoing bilateral tonsillectomy at Ayub hospital complex. In the study group of 100 cases (GI) topical drug was applied with a swab to tonsillar fossa. Mean postoperative pain score was 1.72 ( 0.494 in group I and 2.40 ( 0.492 in group II. The topical drug significantly reduced the postoperative pain and the patients in this group returned to normal diet earlier and better. Postoperative restlessness and request for analgesics was also reduced. The authors recommend the routine use of topical Bupivacaine on tonsillar fossa to achieve better postoperative analgesia.
