Effect of Menopause on Serum Total Cholesterol Level.
J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;11(2):24-6.

A marked difference in the risk of coronary heart disease has been noted between men and women of reproductive age but this gap closes with advancing age and is not attributable to difference in life style. It seems likely that some factors of Reproductive Physiology are responsible for this. This study was designed to see the difference in total cholesterol level in premenopausal and postmenopausal women and to correlate these changes with estradiol level. The estradiol levels were shown to be very much less in the postmenopausal women and there was a highly significant rice in the total cholesterol level of the postmenopausal women. The total cholesterol level is art independent risk factor for coronary heart disease. Ibis study favors the view that decrease in estradiol level and associated increase in the total cholesterol seen in postmenopausal women may be responsible for the increased risk of coronary heart disease after menopause.
