Stored Iron as a Risk Factor for Coronary Heart Disease in Smokers.
J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;11(2):47-50.

This study was undertaken to look for a possible relationship of stored iron with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in smokers. 40 subjects with different categories of CHD and 30 controls were included in the study. CHD patients were again divided into two groups, CHD with smoking as risk factor and CHD without any known risk factor. The parameters of iron status studied were serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) transferrin saturation and serum ferritin values. Significantly increased levels of serum iron, transferrin saturation and Serum ferritin were found in both the groups that is smokers having CHD and in the subjects without any major risk factor. The TIBC was found to he significantly dropped in these groups reflecting large volume of iron. The high levels of stored iron found in the subjects of CHD with smoking risk factor, as compared with controls suggest that there is a cumulative risk of high stored iron in the development of CHD. While in the CHD without any major risk, factor group, stored iron was also significantly increased than controls, suggesting that stored iron may he independent risk for CHD. This study indicates a need to further probe the stored iron as a possible risk factor for CHD.
