Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;13(1-2):0-.

From four different urban slum areas of Rawalpindi, 100 water samples were taken from different water sources and potable water quality was determined on the basis of 4 microbiological parameters. Standard plate count and Multiple tube fermentation techniques were used for microbiological analysis. The results show the presence of faecal coliforms in 74% of the total samples rendering them at high risk where as 26% samples were found to be at intermediate risk and 0% at low risk. 85.1% of the municipal water samples were found to be contaminated with faecal coliforms. It was concluded that the water available for drinking to the residents of these urban slums of Rawalpindi is not fit for human consumption and is the possible cause of some of the water borne diseases prevailing in these areas.
