Changing Pattern of Liver Disease in Upper Punjab.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;13(1-2):0-.

192 patients underwent percutaneous needle biopsy of liver in the Medical Department of Holy Family Hospital from 1980 to 1997. A high incidence of "Non specific hepatitis" (38%) was noted in patients biopsied in the period 1980 to 1988, whereas liver cirrhosis (42%) and chronic active hepatitis (17%) far outstripped all other types of liver disease in those under going the procedure from 1989 to 1997. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies were found in a large number of the latter group. We believe hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV induced chronic liver disease has markedly increased in upper Punjab during the last decade, with HCV contributing the larger number of cases.
