Evaluation of Diagnostic Alternatives in Acute Amoebiasis Serology (ELISA) vs Sigmoidoscopy.

This study was aimed at finding out the relative efficacy of sigmoidoscopy and antiamoebic antibody (detected by ELISA method) in diagnosing acute amoebic dysentery. A total of 50 patients consisting of 40 males and 10 females, were included in the study. All the patients included in the study-were more than 13 years old. Sigmoidoscopy was normal in 10 (20%) patients, 40 (80%) patients had abnormal test in which punctate haemorrhages and ulcers were the commonest findings. Most lesions were seen in the sigmoid colon, punctate haemorrhages in all the 40 (100%) patients and ulcer in 28 (70%) patients, with abnormal sigmoidoscopy. Late part of rectum showed punctate haemorrhages in 30 (75%) and ulcers in 12 (30%) patients. The anti-amoebic antibody detected by ELISA was positive in 49 (98%) patients.
