Prevalence of Symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in Elderly Men.

This study was carried out at the Department of Urology, Lahore General Hospital Lahore and Mayo Hospital Lahore, in men above the age of 55 years to document the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. They never presented to the doctor with urinary symptoms, and they were the attendents of the hospital admitted patients. Prostatic symptoms scoring was done according to the American Urological Association symptoms score. Five subjects had moderate 22 subjects had mild symptoms score, whereas three subjects were asymptomatic and mean symptoms score was 4.43. In the first month of follow up no change in prostatic symptoms score was noticed. In the second month of follow up, deterioration in symptoms score was 337%. In the third month symptoms score remained unchanged. In the fourth and fifth months, deterioration of symptoms score was 1.45% and 43% respectively. In the sixth month improvement in symptoms score was 0.68% with reference to provious month. We concluded that 90% of the subjects were with prostatic symptoms and 10% were symptomless.
