Biomedica Jan ;14:9-13.

This prospective study was designed to identify the microorganisms causing bacteriuria in catheterized patients of benign prostatic hyperplasia who were to undergo transurethral resection of prostate. Sensitivity pattern of these organisms as well as the role of prophylactic antibiotics in eradicating these organisms was also determined. A total of 45 patients were randomly distributed into three groups. Control group did not receive any antibiotics, whereas second and third groups received Imipenem and Ceftriaxone respectively in a single prophylactic dose. Majority of our patients (9333%) were infected pre-operatively. E. coli was the most common organism (46.66%) followed by Proteus (20%) and Pseudomonas (6.66%). Post-operatively, 86.60% of control group patients were infected, whereas, only 1333% and 20% were infected in second and third groups respectively. Therefore, we concluded that single dose prophylaxis was effective in eradicating these organisms, Imipenem being slightly more effective (86.67%) than Ceftriaxone (80%).
