Back pain in family practice.
Med Today Jan ;1(1):4-7.

Low back pain is one of the commonest presentations in family practice, yet this complaint is often poorly understood and frequently mismanaged. Eighty-five percent of back pain problems are related to musculoskeletal / non-specific causes. One and a half percent or less may be caused by serious diseases. Laboratory tests and radiology are often of limited value and in the great majority of cases; history and examination are of great practical value. Early mobility is more effective than prolonged rest. Emphasis is needed on active rather than passive methods with focus on self-care.
