Patterns of Intracranial Mass Lesions - Experience of 78 Cases.

Objective: To evaluate the patterns of intracranial mass lesions in our locality. Design : A retrospective study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at Department of Neurosurgery, Chandka Medical College Hospital, over a period of three years i.e., from July, 1998 to June, 2001. Subjects and Methods: Case records of patients who were operated within specified period for mass lesions and had histopathological diagnosis were reviewed and searched. Results: There were 78 patients, 52 males and 26 females. Mean age of presentation was 36 years. Age group mainly affected was 16-39 years (44.87%). Most common mode of presentation was headache with vomiting (48.71%). All patients underwent CT scan brain with contrast enhancement along with other routine investigations. Intracranial mass lesions with proven histopathology were tuberculomas (35.89%), brain abscesses (15.38%), fungal masses (6.41%), hydatid cyst (2.56%), and neoplastic lesions (39.74%). Conclusion: Common lesions found were of infective origin (60.24%), followed by neoplastic lesions i.e., primary and secondary brain tumours (39.74%).
