Value of Urine Nitrite Test in the Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection.
J Surg Jan ;21-22:36-7.

This study was designed to evaluate the urinary nitrite by dipstick method as a screening test for the diagnosis of urinary tract infection in catheterized patients, using quantitative urine culture as gold standard. Nitrite determination by dipstick method and urine culture was carried out on urine samples from 163 catheterized patients. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the test were 25.0%, 86.6%, 68.7% and 49.61% respectively. It was concluded that due to high false negative (75.0%) and false positive (13.4%) rate, determination of urinary nitrite by dipstick method is not an excellent screening test for the diagnosis of urinary tract infection, especially in catheterized patients.
