J Med Sci Jan ;14(1):10-3.

Background: Leakage from an anastomosis in the gastrointestinal tract is major complication that is often associated with increased mortality, morbidity and to evaluate the safety of single-layer interrupted serosubmucosal anastomosis in construction of various gastrointestinal anastomosis, this study was designed. Research Methodology: This descriptive study was carried out over a period of six months from September 2004 to March 2005, in surgical C unit Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar N.W.F.P. Study comprised of 100 consecutive patients after fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. Safety of technique was analyzed, comparing the outcome in terms of morbidity and mortality. Results: Anastomatic leakage rate was 4%, with a mortality of 2%. Conclusion: Single-layer interrupted serosubmucosal anastomosis is a safe technique, can be easily learned by relatively inexperienced surgeons and should be a part of the armamentarium of the well-trained surgeon.
