The frequency and histological types of Thyroid Carcinoma in Northern Pakistan.

581 biopsies were studied between Jan 1993 to December 1995. Out of these 520 cases (89.5%) were non-neoplastic leisons while 61 cases (10.5%) were neoplastic in nature. The neoplastic cases comprised of benign lesions - 40 cases (65.5%) and malignant lesions - 21 cases (34.5%). The peak age of these malignant lesions in females was 45 years and in male 65 years. Female to male ratio is 3:2.1. The most common histological type was papillary carcinoma (52.3%), followed by follicular carcinoma 23.8% insular carcinoma (9.5%), medullary carcinoma (4.8%) and undifferentiated carcinoma (4.8%). Hospital based frequency, age and sex distribution clinical presentation and histological types were discussed.
