Polygenetic multifactorial etiology of suicide and suicide behavior.
Pak J Neurological Sci Jan ;1(1):25-9.

Suicide rates have always differed from one country to another. Many reasons have been given for these divergences, from demographic factors, ethnic differences, religion, attitudes to suicide, legislation pertaining to suicide, ways of controlling stress and public health care prevention measures, to the reliability and validity of health statistics in a given country. In spite of all these factors a certain proportion of the variability is still attributable to the differing suicide risk between countries and nations. Indirect proof for this was provided by Sainsbury and Barraclough1, followed by Burvill2, when they compared differences among suicide rates of immigrant groups in the USA and Australia and concluded that these strongly resembled the differences among their ancestral groups in Europe. This is a review article.
