Fight against Dengue: the Malaysian scenario.
Infect Dis J Jan ;14(4):126-8.

With regard to DF/DHF surveillance, Malaysia advocates both passive and active system and, it has a very good serology and virology laboratory facilities. It is among a few countries in the world that have the ability to predict dengue epidemics. However, it remains a question whether this information is being used effectively in planning or emergency response. Most countries face a crisis mentality of under-reporting during interepidemic periods and over-reporting during epidemics. Therefore, serious effort must be looked into these aspects. The factors mentioned above are possibly a few factors worth highlighting to be some of the many reasons why it is so difficult to fight dengue. To date, there is no objective and thorough research planned on why the problem persists. Experts agree that a vaccine is desperately needed to bring down the number of infections where many research groups are working on it in full force. Till then, Malaysia can only hope to implement the prevention and control measures based on WHO guidelines effectively by all: the health authorities, the politicians and the public. This is a review article.
