Neonatal tetanus: Disease pattern in Peshawar (NWFP).

A descriptive study was conducted at the tetanus unit of the Government Children Hospital Peshawar, Pakistan. A total of 275 cases were managed in the hospital during the study period. 215 cases were male (78%) and 59 cases (22%) female. The majority of cases were brought from tribal areas. 238 cases were delivered at home (86%) and 217 cases (78%) were attended by TBA`s at the time of delivery. The commonest presentation was reluctance to feed, followed by convulsions, irritability and fever. Majority of cases (70%) stayed at hospital for 15 to 25 days. 22% cases died in the hospital while 73% cases were sent home and 8 cases (3%) referred to tertiary care unit.
