Change of Blood Pressure and Heart Rate in a group of Normal Healthy Students and staff of a Medical College in Supine and Upright Posture.
Pak J Med Sci Jan ;17(2):90-3.

Objective: To find out the normal blood pressure and pulse rate and the change in these parameters in supine and erect posture in a group of normal healthy young Nepalese. Design: Blood pressure was measured by mercury sphygmomanometer in supine posture and after one minute of upright position. Pulse rate was taken simultaneously by digital examination of pulse. Setting: Nepal Medical College, Jorpati, Kathmandu, Nepal. Subjects: Nepalese students and staff (age 18-21 years) of Nepal Medical College. Main Outcome Measures: Slight fall in systolic blood pressure and significant rise in diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure and heart rate in erect position in comparison to that of supine posture. Result: Blood pressure which was 114/71 mmHg in supine position, become 1 10/79mmHg in upright position. Pulse pressure decreased in standing posture 31 mmHg (approx) in comparison to that observed in supine posture 43mmHg (approx). Both mean arterial pressure and heart rate increases in erect posture (90mmHg and 88/min respectively) in comparison to those recorded in supine position. (85mmHg and 76/min respectively). Conclusion: Normal mean resting heart rate and mean blood pressure in young Nepalese are 76/min and 114/71 mmHg respectively. When the subject stand on his/her own feet there is a slight fall in systolic and significant rise in diastolic blood pressure alongwith an increase in heart rate.
