Clinical presentation, morphological types and anatomical distribution of primary intracranial tumors in children.

Objectives: To study the clinical presentation, morphological types and anatomical distribution of primary intracranial tumors in children. Design: Descriptive study Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at The Children`s Hospital & The Institute of Child Health, Lahore, from August 2000 to August 2001. Patients and Method: A total of 30 patients with signs and symptoms suggestive of intracranial tumor were included in this study. Results: Out of 30 patients 22 patients were male and 8 female. The age ranging from one month to 14 years. Most common symptoms were headache followed by vomiting, palilledema, hemiplegia / paresis, cranial nerves palsies. Cerebral astrocytoma was the most common tumor followed by cerebellar astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, craniopharyngioma ependymoma etc. Infratentorial tumors were more than supratentorial tumors in studied cases. Immediate postoperative mortality was 10% due to massive gastrointestinal bleed and meningitis.
