Imaging Spectrum of Cystic Echinococcosis.

Eighty, patients with cystic echinococcosis were examined by different imaging methods over an eight years period (March-90 to February, 98). Liver was involved in 45(56.250 patients while lung showed lesions in 25(31.75%) cases. Two patients (2.5%) each with cerebral and peritoneal hydatid were seen. One patient each (1.25%) showed cyst in spleen, left kidney, right breast, left ovary, dorsal lumber spine and right inguinal lymph nodes. 50 (56.25%) patients were female and 30 patients (37.25%) were male. Age ranged between 10-70 years. Ultrasound and chest X-ray proved most useful in diagnosing over 90% of patients. CT and MRI were employed only in difficult or equivocal cases before planning surgery.
