Prevalence of Microvascular Complications of Diabetic Patients
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Mar 1999;9(3):120-2.
Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi

A cross sectional, population based study was conducted to study microvascular diabetic complications: retinopathy and polyneuropathy in 805 (380 males and 425 females) diabetic, patients reporting to primary care centres in a localized population of Wah in Rawalpindi suburbs. Detailed history and physical examination alongwith ophthalmic and neurological examination was carried out to assess the presence of retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic control was assessed by estimation of their plasma glucose (by glucose oxidase/peroxidase) and glycosylated haemoglobin (by ion exchange chromatography). The prevalence of microvascular complications were, retinopathy: 30% (females:31.2%, males: 29.1%); and polyneuropathy: 22.3% (females: 23.2%, males: 21.3%). The prevalence of these microvascular complications correlated directly with duration of diabetes and inversely with the degree of metabolic control. For better management of diabetics it is essential to have their blood glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin within desirable limits.
