Pancytopenia: clinicopathological study of 30 cases at Military Hospital, Rawalpindi

Pancytopenia is a condition in which there is deficiency of all the cellular elements of blood. The causes of this condition are many and varied. It presents with symptoms of marrow failure such as pallor, dyspenoea, bleeding, bruising and increased propensity to infections. This study was based on 30 consecutive patients of pancytopenia presenting to Military Hospital, Rawalpindi. Age range was from 14 to 70 years. Twenty were male and ten were female patients. All the patients were admitted in military hospital Rawalpindi. The clinical feature were noted at the time presentation and all the patients were thoroughly investigated so as to acertain the underlying cause for this disorder. A definitive diagnosis of etiology of pancytopenia was reached in 28 out of 30 patients. Aplastic anaemia was the most common definite diagnosis (6 patients, 20%). Megaloblastic anaemia (5 patients, 16.7%) was the second common etiology. Three patients had pancytopenia due to acute leukemia. Pancytopenia was post infective in 4 patients. Myelodysplastic syndrome, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, systemic lupus erythrematosus, facilparum malaria, dengue fever, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin`s disease and disseminated malignancies were the cause of pancytopenia in one patient each. In two patients the cause of pancytopenia could not be determined.
