Eligibility
Candidates should have been qualified with a primary medical degree for at least 18 months. The medical degrees of any recognised medical school within the UK and overseas are acceptable. (Recognised medical schools will be listed in the World Health Organisation ‘World directory of medical schools’).
Application and entry procedures are as follows:
Application forms, calendars and order forms for past papers are available from all three Colleges and overseas centres. The Application forms may also be downloaded at the foot of this page.
All Part 1 applicants must complete Form B, ensuring they sign and date the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Agreement of Form B. New entrants, candidates with exemption and candidates re-entering after the seven-year time limit should also complete Form A, ensuring they sign and date the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Agreement of Form A and submit the appropriate documentation or information (see below).
Application must be made on the appropriate forms and submitted with the appropriate fee by the advertised UK and overseas closing dates. When making their first entry to the examination candidates will have their primary medical qualification verified. Candidates making their first entry must either:
state their General Medical Council of the UK registration number – holders of Full, Limited or Provisional Registration only.
or submit their original diploma of primary medical qualification.
or submit an authenticated photocopy (or translation) of their primary medical qualification. Please note authenticated photocopies (or translations) will only be accepted if they have been attested and prepared by one of the following bodies:
The issuing University or Medical School
A British Consulate or British Council
The candidate’s own embassy or High Commission in the United Kingdom.
If you have full, limited or provisional registration with the General Medical Council of the UK your details will appear on the GMC(UK) database, to which the colleges have access, and verification of your qualification can be effected in this way. Therefore you will not need to send in any additional documentation with your application. Please check your name and graduation details (year and university) appear on the GMC(UK) website (see link below) before submitting your application, if you are registered with the GMC(UK).
GMC(UK) website (check a doctors registration)
Original documents submitted with your application forms cannot be collected from administration offices. All original certificates are posted back to candidates by recorded delivery. This can take several weeks. For this reason and because of possible postal delays, candidates are advised to obtain an authenticated copy for their records and to submit their primary medical degree certificate.
Please see ‘Documentation’ of the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Agreement of Form A for further information.
Applications will only be accepted for the next examination and not earlier than one month prior to the closing date.
Applications to sit the examination at any one of the examination centres in the United Kingdom should be sent to the appropriate administration office (please refer to Form B Section 2 – Choice of Examination Centre).
Applications to sit the examination at an overseas centre should be submitted to the centre concerned. Please note that there is limited eligibility to sit the examination in the overseas centres.
Applications which are not complete in every detail, including the fee, may be returned. Applications received after the closing date will be returned. Allowances cannot be made for postal or other delays. Applications for all MRCP(UK) Examinations are accepted on a first come, first served basis dependent upon the number of places available.

MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination Regulations: Marking system
One mark (+1) will be awarded for each correct answer:
No mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer.
Marks will not be awarded for answers in excess of the number required (eg. where two answers are given in response to a one from five question, no marks will be awarded for that question) or where the answer sheet is spoiled and unreadable by the optical marking scanner.
From 2002/2 the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination has been criterion referenced and will assess a candidate's performance in relation to an external standard of performance (pass mark) set by the examiners. From May 2003 candidates one pass mark will be applied for both papers in the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination overall.
EXAMINATION SITTING AND RESULTS
You are advised to allow for any transport delays when planning your time of arrival at the Examination Centre, as under no circumstances will you be permitted to enter the Examination Room later than half an hour after the start of the examination.
Question papers are individually numbered (with Examination Numbers) in the top right hand corner. You must sit at the desk where the question paper is marked with your Examination Number.
Results will be posted by first class mail within four weeks of the date of examination. Results cannot be collected from the Colleges, nor can they be given over the telephone. Three weeks after the date of the examination an answerphone announcement will be available to indicate the date on which results will be dispatched.
