I know of only two places in Rwp/ Isb where FCPS II training in physiology is being imparted. One is shifa College of medicine and the other is Army Medical College. Although the standard of Physiology dept Army Medical College is one of the best in Pakistan , but they wont pay you even a single penny during your training. Shifa college pays a handsome amount of money which amounts to atleat 15,000 per month.
But personally i would suggest that you do Mphil leading to Phd under NUST at Army Medical College. It is more rewarding as you will get a monthly stipend and lots of research grants. Secondly onece you are employed as a Phd it would add Rs 5000 Phd allowance to your salary and above all no body in the world gives a damn to FCPS of pakistan but Phd is respected every where
So make up your own choices after careful deliberation
regards
Farooq

i agree with this dong FCPS in physiology is not worth it as compared to Phd.so if you get a chance go for Phd

Out of a very small number of MBBS, PhDs in Physiology, two are in Shifa College of Medicine now namely Maj. Gen. (R) Prof. Muhammad Aslam and Prof. Nasir Afzal. Prof. Aslam has recently joined SCM and is no more in NUST or AMC. It would be a good suggestion to get enrolled in M. Phil. leading to PhD and get any of these gentlemen as supervisor. This will kill the PMDC objection if any. Another option is UHS where the supervisors are non-medical PhDs. Not yet, but PMDC may have reservations on it as it has on PhD from QAU. So the safest option would be SCM now!

I totally agree with Ayub here...Any body in Pakistan who is interested in doing higher post graduate fellowship/studies in Physiology should go for Shifa college of Medicine , Islamabad...after the addition of Prof.Maj Gen(R)Aslam it has become the best institute for physiology in Pakistan

Dr. Shahid Habib, We are NOT discouraging students to go for FCPS but we ARE encouraging them for PhD! Please take is positively.
Regarding FCPS within Pakistan, HEC has recognised FCPS in clinical subjects equal to PhD but not FCPS in basics. This is their own logic, not acceptable to all basic scientist, not to recognise FCPS in basic sciences equal to PhD. Take example of yourself and Dr. Ahmed Badar. You are happy at your place but your FCPS in Physiology is yet to be recognised equal to PhD, though we all consider your fellowship higher than PhD. This disparity at HEC level is making people tilted towards PhD rather than FCPS. I personally know atleast 3 students enrolled for PhD in the subject of Physiology. By the way, how many students are CURRENTLY doing FCPS?

I agree here with Ayub..Nobody is downplaying the FCPS in Basic Medical Sciences . In fact my wife is doing FCPS in Biochemistry but the fact remains that in the international arena M Phil and PhD carries more weight age and value than FCPS ( which is a local Degree)..although the exam of FCPS in BMS is more tough than Mphil or Phd in BMS still The aim should be to earn a degree which is universally accepted...

PhD in Physiology (not necessarily Human Physiology) is done in Quaid e Azam University Islamabad. It was not recognised by the PMDC at first but now some case to case acceptance is there. Dr. Shamim Alam, Professor of Physiology, Khyber Girls Medical College Peshawar is PhD (Physiology) from QAU. Dr. Salma Aslam Kundi, Professor of Physiology, Ayub Medical College is enrolled in PhD at Hazara University, Mansehra.
There are a few PhD's in Pakistan in Physiology: Maj. Gen (R) Prof. M. Aslam PhD (UK), Prof. Nasir Aslam, Prof. Shamim Alam (QAU), Prof. Azhar (IU BWP), Prof. Taley Yar (Now in Dammam, KSA). All are MBBS and PhD. Among Non-MBBS PhD's I remember Prof. Masood A Qureshi (Kar), Prof. Maqbool (QAU), Prof. Arsalan, Prof. Hafeez.
Some 4 years ago, there were only 7 PhD MBBS were registered with PhD and only 2 were available in Pakistan, Gen. Aslam and Prof. Nasir. Prof. Zain ul Abidin has deceased and others were abroad.
I may be missing only a few if any. So this is the whole story of PhD (Physiology) in Pakistan! We really need more MBBS-PhD in our country who have brilliant future in Physiology. The only problem is where to go for PhD? Where to find a Supervisor? The available supervisors are either saturated or their Institutionn is not recognised for imparting PhD training.

Dear Samreen
Local PhD and MPhil is recognized almost all over the world and has more value as compared to FCPS which is after all NOT a university degree... So if the tie is between FCPS and PhD in any field for somebody planning to go abroad Then PhD should be the logical choice

yes. I agree with you. prof aslam is a renowned prof of physiology. prof azhar khan did his PhD from Islamia University of Bahawalpur. He was professor of physiology at Quaid-I-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur and retired last year. i have the honour to be one of his under graduate students.still we need a lot of physiology teachers.

AOA. I want to share my problem with you people. I am FCPS in Medicine. Due to job problems I joined a private medical college as assistant professor in physiology on basis of FCPS medicine. Now I have developed interest in physiology and also I admire the relax life as teacher in basic. Is there any way by which I can achieve Mphil qualification in physiology while I continue working here as assistant professor as i am getting a handsome amount and do not want to loose experience of A/P. Other question is can I be promoted as associate/ professor on basis of FCPS medicine in physiology or not. Please reply thanks

abbotayub sometimes says that fcps is equal to phd but sometimes he restricts people not go for fcps. what is all this? i know that now a days fcps or phd from a pakistani university is like the degrees of parliamentarians. i know what sort of phd degree is awarded by quaid e azam islamabad. i would like to quote only one example and that is of dr. maqbool ahmad who was under inquiry for a long period of time on the very charges that he was awrding fake phd degrees to his students which ultimately culminated in his removal from his service. dr shamim alam and dr.shahbaz were among his beneficiaries. moreover these degrees are not in physiology but in biological sciences. later on it was known that dr maqbool joined hazar university but soon they also got rid of him. so what sort of phd it will be.
