Neuronal degeneration in malignancy: an understanding for immune pathways.

Degeneration of nervous system in some malignant patients is unrelated to metastatic spread. This degeneration is triggered by an effective antitumor immune response against neuronal antigens present in the nervous system which mimic those antigens that are produced in cancer cells. These can subsequently develop into autoimmune neurodegenerative diseases and are called paraneoplastic neurological degenerations. Although these are of many different varieties, with specific presentations, produced by different tumors, but the mechanism of their formation is almost same. This autoimmune phenomenon can be used in building up the immunity against cancer. In this article a brief review of these pathways has been discussed. This is an Editorial.
