Morphological pattern of ovarian tumors.
Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;2(4):222-8.

Objective: To study the relative frequency and histological pattern of ovarian tumors. Material and Method: This study was conducted in PIMS from Jan 2004 to Dec 2005. One hundred and fifty ovarian tumors were received. All the surgical specimens were fixed in 10 % formal saline and routinely processed. The histological typing of ovarian tumors was done according to WHO classification. Results: The main bulk comprised of surface epithelial tumors [91 (60.67%)]. Among them, 60 were benign neoplasms and 27 were malignant. There were 47 (31.33 %) germ cell tumors, 10 (6.67 %) sex cord stromal tumors and 1 (0.7%) metastatic tumor. The benign category comprised 39 cases of serous cystadenoma, 32 cases of mature cystic teratomas and 21 mucinous cysadenomas. In the malignant group, there were 27 epithelial carcinomas. 14 germ cell tumors, 2 cases of sex cord stromal tumors and 1 case of metastatic carcinoma. Among epithelial tumors 14 were mucinous adenocarcinomas, 8 were serous adenocarcinomas, 5 were endometrioid carcinomas and 1 was undifferentiated. Conclusion: There were minor differences from local studies. The overall frequency of various tumor groups was very similar to that in the West.
