Design: This Observational study was conducted at Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar, from Jan. 2001 to June 2001. Patients and Methods: Fifty patients with irritable bowel syndrome were evaluated with a detailed clinical history to find out the most prevalent symptom of irritable bowel syndrome as described in the Manning`s criteria. Results: Amongst fifty patients of irritable bowel syndrome 90 % had abdominal bloating and distension, 76% had mucus pre rectum, 72% had abdominal pain relieved with defecation, 56% had abdominal pain with predominant constipation, and 16% had diarrhea alternating with normal bowel habit. Conclusion: Young patients with typical irritable bowel syndrome symptoms should not be subjected to extensive investigations. Psychological assessment and reassurance may be the most effective therapy available.
