Rabies: challenge of diagnosis in resource poor countries.
Infect Dis J Jan ;16(3):86-8.

The challenges faced in the control and prevention of rabies is not unique, and there are many equivocal examples in countries facing many public health dilemmas. What sets rabies apart is that although it is 100 % fatal upon clinical onset, it is also completely preventable when the appropriate measures are in place. Control and prevention of the disease is multifaceted. Control of the disease in animals, particularly the domestic dog, will indirectly protect humans against the disease. The disease is further prevented in humans by the wide scale use of post exposure prophylaxis. Commitment from governmental role players is vital to enable both these processes. Accurate surveillance and indication of the burden of disease is clearly important, and will require the support of reliable diagnostics for the disease. Clinical suspicion provides the foundation of subsequent diagnosis and although laboratory confirmation of rabies requires specialized testing it should be attempted. This is a review article.
