Multi Drug-Resistant (MDR) Gram-negative Fermenters: “Our worst nightmare?”.
Infect Dis J Jan ;16(2):52-4.

Understanding the highly complex interplay amongst genes and plasmids involved in ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in hospitals, is one of the crucial fundamental principles in limiting development and spread of MDR pathogens in our institutions. Other principles included in a multi-disciplinarily approach involve rigorous infection control practices, infectious disease consultation, adequate source control, active surveillance and meticulous attention to inappropriate antibiotic use. In contrast to MDR Gram-positive infections, with no new antibiotic classes being developed for MDR Enterobacteriaceae the post-antibiotic era is not eminent - it`s evident. This is a review article.
