A comparative study in the management of perichondritis auricle a prospective study of 28 cases at Lyari General Hospital, Karachi.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causative factors and to compare the results of different treatment modalities in the management of perichondritis auricle. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective Interventional PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted in the department of ENT-Head & Neck Surgery, Lyari General Hospital, Karachi, for a period of LS months from September 2005 to February 2007 SUBJECTS & METHODS : Patients who were admitted in the department of ENT-Head & Neck Surgery, Lyari General Hospital with complaints of pain, swelling and disfigurement of auricle. History was obtained regarding modes of ear piercing, antiseptic methods used if any, and use of any medications, after ear piercing. All patients with perichondritis auricle were managed conservatively or surgically by incision & drainage, and placement of splints, with or without gauze underneath the splints. Results were obtained in two groups regarding pain, swelling and preservation of du contours of the auricle after 15 and 30 days post-operatively. RESULTS: Out of 28 patients, 27 were females. Majority of patients (19) had involvement of right ear: 26 out of 28 patients had history of trauma by multiple ear pricks by unskilled persons to wear ear rings. Patients in whom gauze piece was used along with splints showed better results regarding pain swelling and preservation of the contours of auricle than other patients in the series. CONCLUSION: Perichondritis auricle is common among female inhabitants of Lyari old area of district south Karachi. It is mainly because of self inflicted trauma by multiple ear pricks.
