Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates and their sensitivity pattern.

Objective: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is becoming an increasing problem as far as treatment is concerned. Multiple drug resistance (MDR) or Multiple Antibiotics Resistance is a common phenomenon observed. This study is based on antibiotics pattern of the organism isolated at our center and also look for incidental findings. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study. This study was conducted at Al-Ahsa & Dammam NGHA, KSA from June 2004 to June 2007 Hospitalized patients for both centres included in this study that suffered from different illness and their samples were send to Laboratory for culture and sensitivity. Routine baseline culture and staining techniques used to isolate the organism. The biochemical confirmation was done on API system. Results: This study reveals that Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is 100% MDR or Multiple Antibiotics Resistance. The total isolates were 71 out of which 33(46.50%) were male and 38(53.5%) were female with male & female ratio 1:1.15. Incidental finding was that all isolates were from age group less than 2 years or more than 50 years none was in between age. The isolates were from different sites and from hospitalised patients. The isolates were found to be maximum sensitive to Levofloxacin 100%, Mi nocycline 100% Sulfamethoxazole/ Trimethaprim (SMC/TMP) 97.2% and Cetazidime 93.4%. Conclusion: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an isolate commonly found in hospitalised patients so it is nosocomial pathogen. It is usually seen in patients on some hospital devices. The organism is responsible for high morbidity and mortality as it is resistant to most antibiotics. ulfamethoxazole, Cetazidime, levofloxacin and minocycline can be given in combination. More pre-planned studies are needed for building proper guidelines about this organism. Key words: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, MDR, API system, Nosocomial pathogen
