Tonsillitis and its management with special reference to post tonsillectomy follow-up.

Objective: To assess the improvement in symptomatology of patients suffering from chronic tonsillitis after undergoing tonsillectomy. Design: The study design was comparative. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at ENT department CMH Rawalpindi., from June 2002 to December 2003. Patients and Methods: One hundred patients of ages 5 to 30 of either sex with history of definite recurrent attacks of acute tonsillitis (minimum six per year) were selected for the study. All patients underwent tonsillectomy, performed by dissection method. The patients were followed up during 12 months period. Results: Out of the 100 cases, 99 showed improvement. The mean number of episodes of sore throat and fever in the pre op cases was 9.19. Post operatively this reduced to 2.61 (P-value < 0.05). Conclusion: There was marked improvement in the symptomatology following tonsillectomy.
