Complications Developed in Spinal Cord Injured and Physiotherapy.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;7(1):61-3.

This prospective, comparative, and randomized study was conducted at the department of Neurosurgery , King Edward Medical College/Lahore General Hospital Lahore and Mayo Hospital Lahore from February 1999 to November 1999. Clinical trials were carried out on 60 hospitalized patients of spinal injuries. Patients with spinal cord injuries are severely handicapped, dependent on others for every thing and prone to develop secondary and tertiary complications easily. Incidents of complications are very high during the period of initial hospitalization resulting an increase in mortality rate and morbidity. However, these complications can be prevented by specific Physiotherapy techniques initiated at the period of acute illness. Physiotherapy at this stage has a marked negative effect on the development of these secondary and tertiary complications as well as on controlling mortality rate. This is what we tried to evaluate in this study by comparing the results obtained in experimental and non-experimental group. Outcome of the present study, strongly favors the application of Physiotherapy in the acute phase of illness in the prevention of complications along with its other beneficial effects.
