Infect Dis J Jan ;17(1):3-6.

Objective: to study the prevalence of depression in tuberculosis patients in comparison to non-tuberculous control and its correlation with disease pattern Method: Eighty-eight patients of tuberculosis and eighty-one family members visiting DOTS Centre at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre were included in the study. The degree of depression was studied by administration of a questionnaire using Hamilton depression scale. Results: Depression was observed in 45.5% percent of the patients and 13.4% of the family members. It was more in elderly patients (p=0.001) with pulmonary tuberculosis (p=0.003), extensive disease (0.009), and more duration of illness (p<0.05) . Category 2 patients are more depressed (p=. 004). It was significantly more in patients who were living in nuclear family (p=0.01) and were unmarried (p= 0.005). No difference was observed in relation to educational qualification (p=0.08), or gender (p=0.5) of the patients. Similarly it showed no significant difference between employed or unemployed (p=0.12) Conclusion: Tuberculosis not only affects the body but it also affects the behavior of the patients. Therefore management of depression should also be included in management of tuberculous patients.
