Latest Pattern of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis in Pakistan.
Infect Dis J Jan ;17(1):14-7.

Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is emerging as a possible threat to the global tuberculosis control efforts. It is a challenge not only for the public health but also in the context of global economic burden, especially in the absence of proper national level programmes in the developing nations. Worldwide increase in MDR-TB cases has been noted. In 2005, a survey conducted by World Health Organization (WHO), including 55,779 tuberculosis cases, reported 1.1% of new (i.e. previously untreated) tuberculosis cases in the world were multi-drug resistant. The present laboratory based study was carried out at Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi, from November 2005 through November 2006. Out of 1247 samples received for MTB culture, 290 yielded the growth and 89 isolated were found to be MDR-TB. Our study pointed towards the rising pattern of MDR-TB (30.7%), an increase of more than 2 % from previously reported MDR-TB strains (28%) from AFIP, Pakistan. This is a review article.
