Dental erosion among 12 year old school children in Belgaum city - a cross sectional study.

Objective: To determine relation between gender, dietary and oral hygiene habits with dental erosion. Design: Cross sectional study. Methods: A two stage random sampling procedure was used and 200 school children, aged 12 years were selected. Data regarding dietary habits, oral hygiene habits and medications was collected from the children using closed ended questionnaire. Children were instructed to maintain 3 day diet diary to confirm findings of the questionnaire. Dental Erosion was assessed using Modified Smith and Knight Index. Statistical analysis included chi-square test. Results and Conclusion: Prevalence of dental erosion was 22%. Consumption of Citrus fruits, pickles, lemon, buttermilk, tamarind showed significant association with dental erosion.
