Stress, anxiety and depression in mothers of children with beta thalassemia.

Objectives: To assess stress, anxiety and depression among mothers of children suffering from beta thalassemia. Design: This research used correlational design. It was hypothesized that majority of the mothers experience stress, anxiety and depression and there is a positive relationship between stress, anxiety and depression. Place & Duration of the Study: The study was carried out at the Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi and mothers were recruited through thalasemia centres based in Islamabad, Pakistan. It took three months to complete data collection. Sample and Method: Sample comprised forty mothers of children (5 12 years of age) with beta thalassemia. Urdu translated version of DASS-42 (Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale), was used for assessment of level of stress, anxiety and depression among mothers. Interview schedule was used as a method of data collection. Results: Majority of the mothers were under stress, were experiencing anxiety and depression in relation to their child`s condition. Moreover, significant positive relationship was found between degree of stress, anxiety and depression in mothers. Conclusion: Findings have very important implications and warrant the need for provision of psychological counseling to mothers of children with thalassemia in Pakistan.
