Outcome of two K-wires fixation in clavicle mid shaft fractures.

Background: Fractures of the clavicle are mostly treated with conservative method but there is some indications for surgical treatment which are when there is neurovascular compression, open fracture, severe close displaced fractures leading to skin tethering and in non union. The objective of the study was to evaluate the outcome of open reduction and kirschner wire fixation of fracture clavicle. Study design: Descriptive Observational. Place and duration of study: Department of Orthopedics Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. From October 2002 to December 2006. Patients and Methods: 35 patient of either sex with fracture clavicle mid shaft, treated by open reduction internal fixation, were included in this study. Patient were followed for 1 year and assisted clinically and radiologically for union and other complication. Outcome was graded good, excellent and poor on fracture union and shoulder movements. Results: out of 35 patients, 25 (71.3%) were male and 10 (28.7%) were female. Right side involved in 22 patients (63%) and left side in 13 patients (27%). Healing time was from 4 moths to 6 months. Out of 35, six patients developed complications, two wires migrations, and four developed infection and stiffness of shoulder joint. Conclusion: Open reduction and internal fixation of clavicle mid shaft fractures with 02 K-wires is one of the favorites method with minimal complication and good results.
