Fracture neck of femur treated with cannulated screws in middle aged patients.

Objective: The objective of the study was to document union rate with cannulated screws in fracture neck of femur (NOF) in the middle age group in which mostly hemiar throplasty i s the recommended method of management. Patient and methods: Twenty five patients were included in this study, who were originally planed for hemiarthroplasty of hip, agreed to undergo osteosynthesis with cannulated screws, irrespective of the time since injury. All patients with Garden type II, III & IV fracture neck of femur, aged from 46 to 62 years, admitted at Nawaz Sharif Social Security Teaching Hospital Multan Rd Lahore from April 2007 to December 2008 were included with the conscent to undergo osteosynthesis with cannulated screws. Results: KOFU (Japan) hip scoring system was used to eveluate results. Sixteen fractures (64%) united on an average of 7.5 months. Out of these sixteen patients, five patients with type II and six patients with type III had excellent results(44%). One patients with type II , three patients with type III and one patient with type IV had good resuls(20%). Nine patients had poor results with complications(36%). Complications: Totally nine patients(36%) had complications. Of which three patients(12%) avascular necrosis, four patients(16%) non-union and two patients (8%) had implant loosening.
