Anthrax - An Overview in Recent Scenario.
Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;51(2):152-69.

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. It is primarily a disease of herbivorous wildlife mammals like deer, wildebeest, and elephants, while domesticated livestock, such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and swine are also affected. Humans generally acquire anthrax directly or indirectly from animals. The word `anthrax` derives from the Greek anthrakis, meaning coal, and alludes to the characteristic sore or `eschar` with its coal - black centre. The French and Italian names for the disease, carbon and carbon-chio, similarly refer to this typical lesion. The disease has names in many other languages referring to various of its dramatic signs and symptoms, such as Milzbrand (German), or Miltvuur (Dutch), meaning `spleen fire`; pustule maligna (Spanish); or to its source of infection, such as `Wool sorters disease`, `Rag pickers disease`, and `Siberian plague`.
