HIV and Pak Army Personnel.
Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;51(2):182-6.

Fifteen thousand, eight hundred and seventeen (15817) persons of Pak Army were tested at their repatriation and then after six months. They were tested by Pasteur-Sanoft and Welcozyme ELISA methods for the presence of anti-HIV antibodies. All those found to be seronegative were re-tested with their fresh serum sample. If found sero-positive on repeat testing, they were tested by a different ELISA method based upon some other principles. Those reacting for anti-HIV on repeat testing were supposed to be confirmed by Western Blotting. Out of 15 pre-screened serum samples received from the patients belonging to different armies (of subSaharan African origin), 11 were confirmed to be seropositive by repeat ELISA and Western Blot. The strict criteria for the detection of at least two bends at the site of an env protein (gp 160,120 or 41) and a gag protein (p55,25 or 18) was followed. Almost all of them had multiple bands. Appropriate positive and negative controls were dealt in parallel.
