Teaching ethics in undergraduate medical curriculum - compulsory or optional?.

Objective: To determine medical student’s opinion on how ethics should be taught in undergraduate curriculum, as a compulsory subject or as optional. Subjects and Methods: This opinion survey was carried out amongst 150 fourth (junior) and final (senior) year medical students of Islamic International Medical College, Rawalpindi. Results: One hundred and seven (71%) students responded. Forty percent were in favor of compulsory subject while 26% were indecisive. Junior students were more in favor of compulsory teaching of ethics. Conclusion: We conclude that teaching of ethics should be made compulsory and recommend that the issue should be debated among students, medical faculty and educationists, looking for their enhanced willingness and participation.
