Breast feeding, weaning practices and the education status of mothers during the first 4-6 months of life: a survey.

Objectives: To determine the education status of the mothers in relation with breast feeding practice and weaning practices. Material and methods: This descriptive study was conducted from January 1011 to March 1101 at the vaccination center situated in the Out Door Department of Pediatrics, Civil Hospital, and Karachi. The healthy children 4-6 months old visiting for routine vaccination were included. The Proforma was filled by taking their interview Results: The study showed that exclusive breast feeding practices decreased as the education status of mothers decreased. Similarly delay in initiation of weaning practice (after the age of 4-6 months) was more common in children whose mothers were under matriculate. Conclusion: The education of women has a positive role in understanding the importance of breast feeding and knowledge of suitable time of weaning.
