Rawal Med J Jan ;37(2):161-4.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of common factors leading to re-laparotomy in secondary peritonitis. Patients and Methods: This study was carried out at Department of Surgery Chandka Medical College Hospital, Larkana, Pakistan for one year duration. Consecutive patients admitted with secondary peritonitis who underwent re-laprotomy were included in the study. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS v 17.00. Results: Total of 139 patients were included in the study. Most common factor leading to re-laparotomy was intra abdominal collection in 64 (46.04%) patients followed by anastomotic/repair site leakage in 40 (28.77), enterocutaneous fistulas in 30 (21.58%) and hemorrhage in 5(3.59%). Conclusion: We found intra-abdominal collection to be the most frequent factor leading to re-laparotomy. We suggest future researches with larger sample sizes to provide more conclusive results.
