Pak J Public Health Jan ;2(3):33-7.

Based on the secondary data, the paper explores determinants of high burden of miscarriages amongst married women of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). Miscarriages in AJK are 19% as compared to 8% in Pakistan. With a rural-urban population ratio of 88:12 and the mainly mountainous topography, health coverage is still inadequate in AJK. More than 50% of the women in AJK are of the reproductive age group with sex ratio of 96 males per 100 females. Unmet need for family planning in AJK is 46%; whereas it is 25% in Pakistan. The paper urges upon the need of collaboration for action on the social determinants of health and emphasizes on the need for formulating health system strategies targeted towards both the supply and demand sides in AJK.
