Dengue control: using the health systems approach.
Pak J Public Health Jan ;2(3):20-5.

Dengue is a fast spreading, arthropod borne viral disease associated with a significant public health impact. This disease is endemic in 100 countries with 25 million people at risk in the tropical and sub tropical regions. With the passage of time not only are the number of reported dengue cases increasing but the dengue outbreaks are also becoming more explosive in nature. It is estimated that the global burden of dengue might parallel that of other diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, placing a heavy economic toll on communities and governments. The consistent increase in the number of dengue cases is evidence enough that the existing strategies have not succeeded in accomplishing the desired goal. The effective and efficient control of the disease needs to be accomplished through an innovative health systems approach. This paper has presented the health systems pathways framework to address the increasing burden of dengue fever in Pakistan through a multipronged approach with interventions targeted at various levels; namely, at the individual level, at the household level, on a community level, as well as addressing the problems faced by the health sector.
