Pathological aspects of Placenta in cases of perinatal mortality.

A study of 200 placentae with their appandages from patients with Pre-natal foetal mortality after 28 weeks of gestation was carried out. Patients selected for this study were of pregnancy toxaemias and accidental haemorrhage. Placental infarcts of varying extent and ages were the most frequent findings. Retroplacental haematomas, perivillous fibrinoid necrosis, intervillous coagulation Haematomas, faetal stem arterial thrombosis, endarteritis obliterans, fibromuscular hyperplasia and chorionangioma were other positive findings observed. In addition placental sepsis especially of basal plate region was a frequent occurence. Umbilical cord sepsis of one or all the vessels was also observed. Thrombotic occlusion of one of the vascular channels was also seen in a few cords.
