J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(2):82-5.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of interferon a-2B alone with interferon a-2B plus ribavirin combination as initial treatment for chronic hepatitis C interventional study patients. Design: Interventional study. Place and Duration of Study: The study included 183 patients who were treated for chronic hepatitis C, from January 1996 to December 1999 in Gastroenterology Dept, PGMI, Peshawar. Material and Methods: Records of interventional study patients with chronic HCV hepatitis, who were given interferon Alfa monotherapy or in combination with oral ribavirin were analyzed for baseline parameters, response rates, and any adverse effects. Results: Complete response was found in 35.29% patients in interferon monotherapy group as compared to 87.83% patients in combination group (P < 0.05). Sustained response was found in 30.88% patients in interferon monotherapy group as compared to 82.61 % patients in combination group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Interferon plus ribavirin combination therapy is superior to interferon monotherapy in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C interventional study patients (P < 0.05).
