The frequency of various human malaria parasite infections at private clinic in Mardan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: a study of 230 cases of Malaria.

Objective: To know the frequency of various human malaria infections at private clinic in district Mardan. . Material and methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at a private clinic in district Mardan with facilities of clinical laboratory. This study was performed from 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2012. All patients up to 12 years of age with fever with “no focal signs on history and clinical examination” were enrolled in the study. Blood smear (thick and thin films) for malarial prarasite (MP) were advised for those patients with fever with no focal signs. Patients with fever but negative for blood smear slide for MP were excluded. Results: A total of 230 patients were included in the study. Males were 119 (51.7%) and females were 111(48.3%). Plasmodium vivax was seen in 202 (87.8%) patients and plasmodium falciparum was seen 28 (12.2%) patients. Main symptoms were fever 100%, headache 32%, vomiting 49%, diarrhea 29%, and splenomegaly 36%. Laboratory findings were hemoglobin 5gm to less than 9gm% in 58% cases while less than 5gm% in 7% cases and platelet count 50000 to less than <150000 / cumm in 59% cases while less than 50000/cumm in 7%. Conclusion: The most common human malaria infection in district Mardan is P.Vivax. No mixed infection was found in this study.
