An epidemiologic study of children with epilepsy in Taif region KSA.

Objective: To determine the prevalence, etiology and clinical pattern of childhood epilepsies in Children Hospital Taif. Study Design: Retrospective review of the hospital record, managed for epilepsies in pediatric neurology Department at Children Hospital Taif. Settings: Department of Pediatric Neurology, The Children Hospital Taif. Material and Methods: Three hundred and ten children between the ages of 3 months to 12 years were included in the study, who visited the neurology clinic during January 2012 to December 2012. Data analysis was done with SPSS version11.0 computer soft ware using simple descriptive statistics. Results: Frequency rate for epilepsy is 38.75% in patients who presented to our neurology clinic. The most common age of onset of seizure was between 2 to 6 years. Most common type of epilepsy was generalized, tonic clonic seizures and most common underlying cause of epilepsy was symptomatic. The EEG results showed epileptic patterns in 50.96% of the patients. Conclusion: Our study is considered a preliminary review for the population based epidemiological studies in childhood epilepsy in Taif region. Most common underlying cause of seizures was symptomatic, however in most industrialized countries, idiopathic epilepsies were most common. Prevalence of epilepsy in Taif region is not so much different from the other parts of the world. As to generalized or partial epilepsies, there are different reports from different parts of the world; however generalized tonic clonic seizures seizures were most common in our area.
