Knowledge of complementary feeding of mothers having infants younger than 2 years of age - a community based study.

Objective: To assess the knowledge of mothers having infants less than two years of age on complementary feeding (CF) in two low socio-conomic communities of Karachi (Bilal Colony and Bhains Colony). Material and Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in Bilal Colony and Bhains Colony over 6 months from January to June 2010. It was a joint collaboration between pediatrics department of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) and Mother and Child care Trust (MCCT). The mothers of children with less than two years of age were recruited. The structured interview was conducted by the general physician enquiring relevant information and knowledge assessment questions. Results: A total of 355 subjects were included from the two sites (Bilal colony n=176 and Bhains colony n=179). Overall 58 (32.9%) respondent had started complementary feeding at six months and out of them 49 (27.8%) were from Bilal colony while only 9 (5.0%) respondents belongs to Bhains colony (P-value=0.04). Conclusion: Our study reported varied level of knowledge of complementary feeding even in two same level SES communities.
